Dear Scouters, Parents and Friends,
As I wrote to advise you earlier this week, the CBC’s Fifth Estate followed up its December 8th profile with another hour-long segment on Scouts Canada and a number of specific instances of abuse that occurred in past decades. It ran Friday night and those of you who watched will agree that it was quite challenging.
While I knew my interview would be difficult, I welcomed the opportunity to express personally our sincere apologies to any Scouts who have been harmed in the past, to emphasize our determination to confront these issues head on and to explain the steps that we have already taken towards doing so. Of course, I also took the occasion to underscore the measures we have and continue to put in place in support of child and youth safety.
In the same spirit, I want to underscore that at all times and in all public comments ...

Scouts, Scouters, parents and friends,
It’s been a few weeks since my last message to you on our enhanced Child and Youth Safety initiatives, and I wanted to give you an update on our progress to date.
As you may know, on December 9, 2011, I spoke with the CBC’s Fifth Estateand announced a number of steps to underline Scouts Canada’s commitment to youth protection. These involved three key elements:

A formal apology to all former Scouts who had suffered harm or abuse who suffered harm at the hands of those who abused the trust and responsibility they had gained as volunteer leaders in our organization;
A formal review of all records held by Scouts Canada by KPMG with an eye to confirming the integrity of past practices, and
The formation of an expert Child and Youth Safety Advisory Committee to offer recommendations on how we can enhance Scouts Canada’s Child and Youth Safety policies and ...

Dear Parents, Scouters, Partners and Supporters:
For 104 years, Scouts Canada has been committed to the healthy development of young people in every community across our country. Children and youth in Scouts gain invaluable experiences and skills that help them develop into capable, confident and well-rounded individuals who are better prepared for success in the world.
For these same reasons, nothing is more important than the wellbeing of the children and youth with whom we work so closely and whose lives we seek to influence for the better. Their safety and health is a solemn obligation that we do our best to meet with great care and concern. That is why we strive to ensure that our child and youth protection policies are the most rigorous of any youth services organization in the country. Today, more than ever, great care is necessary to ensure the children and youth in Scouting are protected ...

1st Riverlake Scouters,
As you know, CBC the fifth estate did a program last night called “Scout’s Honour”. The program focused on some horrible examples of past child abuse in Scouting, both in Boy Scouts of America and Scouts Canada. If a parent approach you about the CBC program or has any questions about Scouts Canada’s volunteer screening processes, here is some information that may help.
First of all, there is detailed information on the Scouts Canada website regarding youth protection. Here is the link. http://www.scouts.ca/ca/youth‑protection
The link has information that may be useful to parents and leaders. It also includes the Duty of Care and the Parent’s Guide on Child Abuse which all new leaders in our Group receive when I interview them as part of the Volunteer screening process.
Second, the Scouts Canada webpage http://www.scouts.ca/ has a link to the letters sent to the CBC from Janet Yale, our National Executive Commissioner ...

Welcome to another exciting year of Cubs with 1st Riverlake Cub Pack. For those of you who are returning, welcome back. For those who are joining us for the first time, we are very happy to have you in our Group. At this time, we have 18 Cubs registered in the Pack.
Meetings – Our meetings will be held Thursdays from 6:30 – 7:45 at Ash Lee Jefferson School.
Leaders – We have a great team of leaders this year but we would really benefit from the addition of two more to assist with supervising Cubs and helping out with activities. We know that leaders will miss some meetings because of work and other commitments, and we need a minimum number of leaders present at each meeting and activity or else we have to cancel it. Having additional leaders available provides more supervision for special activity nights but also creates a little more latitude for all leaders ...

Colony A has received some postcards from Lysander Beavers of Holy Trinity Scout Group – Yeovil, England. So we in turn have been checking out the world map to see where we live and compare that with where Lysander beavers come from in England. We also discussed how we did things slightly differently. We spent the night writing postcards back to the English Colony, then topped it all off with a couple of games and a group photo. The photos are to show the Lysander beavers how we start and end our night and what we did in between.

Parents of 1st Riverlake Scouting Youth
As Year End Camp fast approaches, we think back on a successful year and ahead to the next Scouting year. I know that the Leaders feel it has been a good year. I hope that your child has enjoyed the year so far and will join us at camp on the weekend of 11 Jun.
Once again this year, our Group has decided to offer an early registration discount of 10% ($15) for next year if you act by 12 June. This discount is available to existing members of the Group who are registering for Beavers or Cubs in the Fall. Unfortunately the discount cannot be offered to Scouts or Venturers because those programs cost more to deliver.
We estimate that once again, the total cost of registration for next year will be $150 before discount. In other ...

Saturday, 11 June 2:00 PM
Beavers, Beaver Leaders and parents meet at the Lone Cloud dock for departure on the Clipper at 2:00 PM. (for those of you who have not been here before, it is the road leading to Miller Lake immediately by the lights on Perrin Drive at the Highway 118 off ramp). The Clipper can only transport so many people at one time (~15 or so) so we will have to make a few trips to get everyone. The cubs will be heading over before the beavers. Please do not put your child on a boat without a beaver leader (i.e., don’t assume you can send them over with the cubs if you arrive early). We will all gather on the dock and take attendance, you will say your goodbyes and we will sail away with your children. J
That afternoon after we get settled in our bunks ...

Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend (albeit wet and cool!). Just a reminder there is no beaver meeting Monday night (May 23rd). We will have our closing party on May 30th at the Sackville Superbowl (300 Sackville Drive) from 6:30-7:30.
If your child is going to camp and you haven’t done so yet, you may pay the $15 fee at that time. The schedule for camp is still being finalized (we will send this info out when available) but we will be heading to the Island just after lunch on Saturday June 11th and returning before lunch on Sunday June 12th. If there are any parents who would like to come along and volunteer in the kitchen (supper prep and breakfast prep) please let us know. If you have any questions or concerns about camp please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the other leaders.
Thanks
Heather (Rainbow)
